Other than utilizing renewable energy resources there are still tons of ways that you can take advantage of savings on your electricity bills! Check out some of these energy saving tips that have been sent in from our Energy Projects Online subscribers.
Lighting - You can save money by switching the bulbs in your home to
more compact and energy efficient light bulbs in your high traffic areas.
You will see these everywhere including your local Wal-Mart. Doing this
alone can represent some good savings and money back in your pocket!
Windows - Cold Weather Tips - You can save money during the
cold months by making sure that you have properly insulated windows. This
will help insure that no cold air is coming into your home from the
outside. You can even get insulating window shades to help with keeping
cold air out.
Open your blinds during the day when the sunlight is out,
and close the windows in the afternoon when it gets dark. Make sure that
your windows facing the south side of house are clean to allow the maximum
of winter sunlight into your home.
Windows - Warm Weather Tips
- In the summer you want to reflect as much heat as possible from entering
your home. You can apply reflective film on your windows to keep heat out
and make sure that you have blinds, drapes, or window shades to keep
sunlight out and heating up your home.
Appliances
- You can air-dry your dishes in the dishwasher rather than using your
dishwashers drying cycle. Also, don't wash small loads of dishes or even
laundry for that matter, only do full loads.
Make sure to turn off electronics such as
stereos, computers, tv's, etc. The best way to do this is by getting a
power strip for your entertainment center and just switching it off and
back on when needed.
You can also make sure that your appliances meet
energy efficiency standards as well by having the ENERGY STAR label on
them. This means that the appliance meets the standard set forth by the
EPA and the Department of Energy.
Heating and Cooling Units - If
you have a thermostat in your home make sure that you set it to
comfortably warm in the winter and cool in the summer, just eliminating a
few degrees of temperature will show a significant reduction in your
electricity bill.
On your hot water heater you can turn down the
thermostat to 120 degrees to save electricity along with getting a jacket
as well for insulating the water heater during cold months.
Sensible Driving - Don't drive aggressively. This would be classified as speeding, over accelerating or braking heavily when driving your vehicle.
Additional tips and ideas can also be found in the energy savings
manual put out annually by the U.S
Department of Energy. You can
